- What events/moments/personal experiences change or refine my past perspective to look at art teaching and learning now?
- What current learning or art education theories do I learn related to this change or revision?
- How does my art piece (or the process of making this art piece) represent this change or revision?
- How does my current understanding influence my path of becoming an artist and educator?
In the past, I always had physical schooling. My mother attended a digital university for her bachelors in law, but most everyone I knew attended a physical school. One of my friends did not. She attended a digital high school and was allowed a lot of excursions and free time to do outside of class learnings. She even graduated early. Knowing this, I considered if art would be a subject feasibly taught online, such as in her digital high school.
Currently, I was learning about how environment plays a role in learning. The lighting, the temperature, the expectations and rules, all factor into the depth of learning occurring. If students are being destructed by each other because the classroom is set up poorly, then learning is minimal and selective. The changing of environments online create a new dilemma of students self managing all of their environment, much of which is out of their control.
My art piece was created at home under self management. I am learning more and more how important it is to self govern and respect your learning style, as I do well with others but not with entertainment. I created the felt myself, with some online instruction from my teacher. I was far less productive this week than I would have been in physical class, but I did more with my time for my sanity and health, so that was good for my wellbeing.
In the future, I will have a plan for at home extensions in order to facilitate learning in all environments. This was an unprecedented scenario, but the outcome wasn’t bad. I think the transition was unbalanced but not unstable. In these respects, I hope to fluidly consider students’ learning environments to provide them with the best education.
