Every day I learn something new about teaching and learning now, with time and age. In the past, I would use my surroundings to inform my experience, so I would observe and understand. The ends of my hair are rattled and split with abuse and use, showing how I would overthink and sometimes throw away valuable information about teaching from what I saw. Each year I cut away my hair to leave a shorter canvas to begin with, but this is the first year that I have cut it so short. This emphasizes the routine of learning and constant change that I go through, then and now.
I find that currently I have been stressed about needing to be a ‘perfect’ teacher now, but in education, there is never a perfect teacher. I can stay true to myself, styling my hair / knowledge how I want and deciding how I will present myself. A lot of classroom management skills intertwine with this idea, such as love and logic and teaching for artistic behavior. Most of what I do for myself is more important to be done for the students’, hence the systems and rules. I hope to help them style their own hair, learning the ways they can express themselves and conquer their challenges with my teaching for artistic abilities. Through growth, I can help them help themselves.
My art piece is my bundle of recently cut hair cascading down the majestic tealight holder. Essentially, hair grows because of time and care, as does the person and their capabilities. I wanted to represent how time and care can extend the influence and differentiation. Short hair only has the capability for a limited amount of styles, but long hair can be styled endlessly. The longer the hair, the more it can touch and change with the tendrils. With a new year, I can grow more knowledge and change how I used to approach situations for the better. The photo shows the way that growth and outgrowth can be seen with a beautiful light.
I can use this understanding in the future as I can forgive myself for learning at all times. Every day means a bit of growth, even as it doesn’t seem like that during the time. Eventually, you look at yourself and find a foot worth of hair (growth) and you know it’s time to keep going and growing. I can give myself a little knowledge at a time as I go, allowing gradual improvement.
