Currently, I believe that different classroom management styles do well to either feed into this or pull it apart. Teachers who allow students to speak out of turn are harming the system, because students should learn to listen to each other and allow others to speak more. I believe that teachers who do more activities like chalk talk or micro lab protocol allows the students more equal voice and as such we should utilize these activities.
My art piece is of a flag waving in the wind as the sun sets. I wanted to represent the grandiose democracy our country is built on, and how that feeds into our classrooms. While I was able to make a difference in my schools, I knew many students dropped out or stopped caring. I feel as though that is somewhat caused by their lack of impact - or how they perceive what impact they can make. As a teacher, I believe it crucial to incorporate democratic essence into my periods so the students know they can inform me on how I should change or better suit them.
My current understanding is that democracy in classrooms is heavily correlated to classroom management, and as such I believe that in the future I should incorporate various techniques to promote communication and independence. I hope to show the class in the future that they all have power to change their lives and the world. They all deserve to have an equal say in the class, and the power to do art.
